NELSON HOSPITAL REDEVELOPMENT

RLLA were involved with the recent comprehensive redevelopment of the hospital which began in 2000 with practical completion during 2004. Our responsibility was the preparation of a comprehensive landscape proposal for the hospital.

Working in association with Peter Rough Landscape Architects Christchurch as part of a large design team of architects, hospital planners, and engineers, the project involved the preparation of an overall site plan, including the layout of the roads and parking areas, the development and renovation of the exterior grounds of the hospital, as well as the development of interior landscaped courtyard, documentation of the design and the supervision of work in progress.
The project was phased throughout the extended construction period with the final areas planted during 2004.

Beyond the practical resolution of complex circulation and parking issues, its was decided to apply a design philosophy that created an environment to complement the simple horizontal style and layout of the buildings when viewed from the surrounding areas, and re-established the site as a green link within the surrounding neighbourhood.

Internally, courtyards were created to assist with way finding and orientation, as well as visual relief and relaxation. A philosophy of contextuality and contrast was applied to these courtyards to emphasis their separation from the grid of the main structure.

Siteworks budget: $1,04 million.
